Sculpture Studio
My current work is a reflection of my interest in creating form thru mathematical progression(s).
Driven by my delight in pattern recognition and informed by the arenas and language of: Mathematics, Music, Crystallography, and Chaos Theory, each sculpture is comprised of parts, be they: plates, rolled plates, or pipes; which are related to each other by a set of initial conditions and consistent developmental parameters: somewhat akin to Rounds in music.
I use computer aided design and drafting (CADD) to manipulate simple geometric shapes with mathematical progressions and recorded steps as I work through a virtual (what if) environment. I am currently investigating four different series of works:
The ONE SIDED series: Mobius strips generated from 6 flat planes.
The TET-CAP series: based on arranging cylinders around a tetrahedron in a consistent fashion; and by which an encapsulated space is formed by 3 or 4 identical parts.
The PIPE series: connected pipe forms developed from extruded hexagons
The CYCLING FORCES series: based on portions of cylinders arranged in a consistent fashion related to hexagonal shapes.
My interest in creating this kind of artwork is one of provocation. Many times we pass by the simple things as we rush to sort out life’s complexities. In this rush to know, it is easy to overlook the building blocks of the world around us and I hope that my sculptures will help to set a course for the contemplation of the seemingly simple and inevitable aspects of our lives and encourage a sense of deep discovery and appreciation of the interdependent relationships we have with each other and the earth.
